DPAA Director of Education

Position Description

A) Basic Function:

The Director of Education develops, administers, and evaluates all DPAA educational programs, including in school programs, participatory programs, and field trip programs. He/she plans and manages the educational outreach of DPAA through the supervision of staff, musicians and volunteers, and by representing DPAA’s education mission with other institutional partners, school districts, universities, and the community.

B) Qualification Requirements:

The Director of Education shall possess the following qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree required (Education highly preferred).
2. Minimum five years of demonstrated experience in managing performing arts educational programs.
3. Supervisory experience, including directing the work of musicians and volunteers.
4. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
6. Familiarity with current trends in school curriculum development at the local, state, and national levels, including the Common Core.

C) General Responsibilities:

As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director is responsible for the following:

1. Participates in an annual goal setting and evaluation process for his/her position with the President and CEO.
2. Attends senior staff meetings as convened by the President and CEO.
3. Attends meetings of the Board and Board committees and supports Board committees as assigned.
4. Submits an annual budget for his/her department.
5. Participates in strategic planning for DPAA and leads assigned sections of the strategic planning process.
6. Manages special projects and priorities as requested by the President and CEO.
D) Specific Position Responsibilities:

In-School Educational Programs

1. Coordinates educational events and programs for the Ballet, Opera, and Philharmonic Orchestra in schools and school districts served by the Alliance.
2. Coordinates volunteer docents and their events and programs in schools and school districts served by the Alliance.
3. Facilitates planning for teacher and artist workshop training in conjunction with the SPARK program of the DPAA.
4. Develops collateral educational materials with staff and volunteers.
5. Oversees the work of the School and Partner Resource Manager to schedule in-school program events and educational activities.
6. Coordinates school-based programs in joint efforts with the Muse Machine.
7. Cultivates relationships and joint educational efforts with school districts, universities, and other educational entities to expose youth to the arts.
8. Serves as a principal spokesperson for the Alliance with respect to arts education.
9. Participates in grant development with the Development Department to identify and apply for funding for arts education grants.
10. Works closely with the Marketing and Communications Department to develop collateral materials promoting educational programs.
11. Manages implementation of the new Arts Connect program as part of the 2016 Hearst Foundations grant to expand education programs inclusive of all three Alliance art forms. 
12. Oversees the work of musicians in programs including in-school ensembles, SPARK, Q the Music and Arts Connect.  

Participatory Programs 

1. Works with the Ballet Artistic Director to further develop the Ballet’s school as an integral component of the educational programs of DPAA.
2. Works with staff and external partners to further develop the Q the Music program as an integral component of the education programs of DPAA.  
3. Works with staff and conductors to further develop the Youth Orchestra, Youth Strings, and Junior Strings programs as integral components of the educational programs of the DPAA.
4. Works with Opera Artistic Director and other staff to further develop the Artist-in-Residence Program as an integral component of the educational programs of DPAA.

Field Trip Programs

1. Coordinates and schedules field trip performances of the Alliance, working with staff and volunteers. These currently include Magic Carpet Concerts, Young People’s Concerts, and SPARK concerts.  
2. Schedules and promotes open rehearsals of the Ballet, Opera, and Philharmonic Orchestra for youth audiences.
3. Works with staff, volunteers and DPO Artistic Director to plan events of the DPO Family Series. 
4. Schedules and promotes Masterclasses with visiting guest artists, as appropriate. 

E) Line of Communication and Accountability:

The Director of Education reports to the President and CEO of DPAA.  He/she works with the senior leadership team to coordinate interdepartmental efforts and activities.  The Director works closely with the artistic directors of the Ballet, Opera, and Philharmonic Orchestra to effectively communicate the brand identity of DPAA and associated art forms.  He/she supervises departmental staff.

F) Performance Standards:

The effectiveness of the Director of Education shall be assessed against the following standards:

1. High degree of utilization of in-school programs.
2. High degree of utilization of participatory programs.
3. High degree of utilization of field trip programs.
4. Favorable evaluation and receptivity of DPAA educational programs among schools and school districts.
5. Positive field experiences and participation of volunteer docents serving DPAA educational programs.
6. Positive feedback and participation of artists and artists-in-residence serving DPAA educational programs.
7. Overall quality of customer service experience provided by the Education Department to all stakeholders.

G) Evaluation/Review Process:

The Director participates in an annual performance review with the President and CEO based upon a performance plan for his/her position.  The performance plan will include established annual goals for the position and metrics of success.  Decisions of compensation are ordinarily reviewed annually and are contingent upon the overall performance of the organization.  The DPAA is an at-will employer in the State of Ohio.
