DPO Presents a Weekend of Jazz and Genius with "American Songbook with John Pizzarelli"
DAYTON, OH (April 10, 2013) – On Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at 8 p.m. in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, Music Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will present American Songbook with John Pizzarelli, the sixth and final concert in the DPO 2012-2013 Imagine Season’s Kettering Health Network SuperPops Series.
He’s been called “hip with a wink,” “madly creative,” “a tour de force,” “a rare entertainer,” “the genial genius of the guitar, ” and the man responsible for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” He’s jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli.
And he’s definitely got game.
He’s performed with Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Slam Stewart, and George Shearing. And, Pizzarelli has opened for such greats as Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra.
His album discography includes The Rare Delight of You (2002), Bossa Nova (2004), Knowing You (2005), Dear Mr. Sinatra (2006), With A Song In My Heart (2008 Grammy Award nominated), Rockin’ In Rhythm (2010), and Double Exposure (2012). He also performs on several tracks of Paul McCartney’s 2012 album, Kisses on the Bottom.
For his DPO SuperPops debut, Pizzarelli will most likely perform works of such composers as Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Harry James, Richard Rodgers, and Bobby Troup. The repertoire will be announced from the stage and will include many familiar jazz standards.
For American Songbook, John will bring to his work a cool jazz flavor, brilliant guitar playing and singing, and a love for a singularly American art form – jazz.
Tickets for American Songbook with John Pizzarelli range from $19 to $72 and are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at www.daytonperformingarts.org. Senior, teacher and student discounts are available at the box office.
