DAYTON, OH (September 14, 2016) – On Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 8 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman, will present the first concert in the 2016–2017 Dayton Freight Rockin’ Orchestra Series, Music of Billy Joel with Michael Cavanaugh.  Associate Sponsor for this performance is Miller-Valentine Group, and HMR Tech is Supporting Sponsor through the Military Appreciation Program. DPAA’s Innovation Partner for this 2016-2017 Excite Season is the DP&L Foundation: Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

Michael Cavanaugh IS the “New Voice of the American Rock & Roll Songbook.”  He is a charismatic performer, musician and actor, made famous for his piano/lead vocals in the Broadway Musical Movin’ Out.  Michael Cavanaugh was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in this title role and evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man himself. Michael appeared in Movin’ Out for three years in over 1,200 performances, receiving accolade after accolade, which culminated in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations.

With the closing of Movin’ Out at the end of 2005, Michael began touring in his own right, creating a show that reinterprets the modern pop/rock songbook. It wasn’t long before symphony orchestras discovered Michael’s talents and audience appeal. He accepted his first orchestral booking, “Michael Cavanaugh – The Songs of Billy Joel and more,” which debuted in April 2008 with the Indianapolis Symphony.  This October, Michael brings this electrifying performance to the Schuster, joining forces with the incredible Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, to perform an evening full of Billy Joel’s greatest treasures.

Having sold more than 150 million records, Billy Joel ranks as one of most popular recording artists and respected entertainers in the world. Throughout the years, Joel’s songs have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people, mirroring his own goal of writing songs that “meant something during the time in which I lived … and transcended that time.”  Billy Joel has had 33 Top 40 hits and 23 Grammy nominations since signing his first solo recording contract in 1972. In 1990, he was presented with a Grammy Legend Award. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, Joel was presented with the Johnny Mercer Award, the organization’s highest honor, in 2001. In 1999 he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has received the Recording Industry Association of America Diamond Award, presented for albums that have sold over 10 million copies.

Together with the DPO, Michael Cavanaugh will pay homage to Billy Joel with a performance of some of his greatest and most adored hits, including “Movin’ Out,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “She’s Got a Way,” “Longest Time,” “Pressure,” “Goodnight Saigon,” “River of Dreams,” “New York State of Mind,” “Uptown Girl,” “Just the Way You Are,” “You May Be Right,” and, of course, the timeless classic “Piano Man.”  A few additional surprises may be in store as well.

The phenomenal Michael Cavanaugh and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra invite you to come to the Schuster on October 8 to “forget about life for a while” while they entertain you with the songbook of everyone’s favorite Piano Man, Billy Joel.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio's cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents.  The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year "Music Alive" grant from New Music USA and the League of merican Orchestras.
