DAYTON, OH (October 19, 2017) – On Friday, November 3, 2017 at 8 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Conductor Patrick Reynolds, will present the second concert in the 2017–2018 Dayton Freight Rockin’ Orchestra Series, Michael Cavanaugh: The Music of Elton John and More. The DPO is thrilled to welcome back to the stage guest vocalist and pianist Michael Cavanaugh. Leadership Sponsor for this performance is Brady Ware & Company.

Sir Elton Hercules John holds court as one of rock’s most memorable songwriters, with so many different types of songs that everyone has a favorite. Rolling Stone magazine puts his music into the category of music that helped define an age when “radio still mattered more than television.” Elton John is also one of the most highly acclaimed and successful solo artists of all time. He has achieved 38 gold and 31 platinum or multiplatinum albums, has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, and holds the record for the biggest selling single of all time. In addition, Elton has 3 Oscar Award nominations (winning in 1995), and a Tony Award (with 4 nominations) for Best Original Score for Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida in 2000. This November, the Dayton Philharmonic is honored to pay tribute to this music powerhouse!

Michael Cavanaugh is the new voice of the American Rock & Roll Songbook and a charismatic performer, musician and actor, famous for his piano and lead vocals in the Broadway musical Movin’ Out. Handpicked by Billy Joel to star in Movin’ Out, Cavanaugh evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man and appeared in the show for 3 years and over 1,200 performances, receiving accolade after accolade, culminating in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations.

Last season, Michael Cavanaugh joined the DPO for a knockout concert of The Music of Billy Joel, and now he returns to Dayton, back by popular demand, to perform some of Sir Elton John's most famous hits, including “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets,” as well as “Your Song” – Elton’s first big hit. The concert will also feature other classic rock standards, such as “Pinball Wizard,” “Live and Let Die,” and “American Pie.”

“My gift is my song and this song’s for you.” . . . And this evening of music is for you; grab your tickets now!

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio's cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year "Music Alive" grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
