Concert featuring the music of film composer John Williams is culmination of two-week long celebration
On Friday and Saturday March 30 and 31 at 8 pm in the Schuster Center, Music Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra present Heroes and Villains, the fifth of six Chase SuperPops series concerts this season.
As part of the finale of a two-week-long celebration of films for which John Williams composed the scores, the DPO presents a program featuring 12 Williams compositions, nine of which are from the scores he composed for films. The first half of the concert begins with Liberty Fanfare, followed by the first two movements of Escapades for Alto Sax and Orchestra featuring guest alto saxophonist Mark Otwein, and Elegy for Cello & Orchestra featuring DPO Principal Cellist Andra Lunde Padrichelli. Next, the DPO performs music from the scores of the films Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Saving Private Ryan, and Hook.
Following intermission, the DPO continues with music from the films Superman, Far and Away, The Terminal (featuring DPO Principal Clarinetist John Kurokawa), Schindler’s List (featuring DPO Acting Concertmaster Aurelian Oprea), Star Wars, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
At 7:00 pm, Friday, March 30 on the DP&L Stage in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center, there will be a Stars of Tomorrow performance by Oakwood High School Concert Band, Ron Nelson, Director.
