“Mozart the Celebrity” is first of four piano concerts
Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director Neal Gittleman and the DPO are pleased to welcome special guest pianist Janina Fialkowska as artist-in-residence for the week of April 24. Following a free concert at Christ Episcopal Church on April 25, Ms. Fialkowska moves to the Schuster Center on Thursday, April 27 at 8 pm to perform in Mozart the Celebrity, the first of four piano concerts in the NCR Miracle of Mozart Piano Concerto Series.
The works featured this week are from Mozart’s early and middle periods. The program begins with Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 in E-flat major, K. 16, obviously his very first symphony, written when he was only eight years old! The centerpiece for this first Piano Concerto Series concert is Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 13 in C major, K. 415, played in the sunny key of C major, most likely written in the winter of 1782-1783 when Mozart was 26. He wrote the Symphony No. 36 in C major, the Linz, for his visit to the city of the same name.
Born to a Canadian mother and a Polish father in Montreal, Janina Fialkowska started to study the piano with her mother at the age of five. Later, she entered the Ecole de Musique Vincent d’Indy, studying under Yvonne Hubert. The University of Montreal awarded her both advanced degrees of Baccalaureat and Maitrise by the time she was only 17! A fine musician at an early age…giving her much in common with Mozart.
