CD celebrates Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary, features performances by all four of DPO’s Music Directors – Katz, Wendelken-Wilson, Jackson, and Gittleman
On Wednesday, May 7 at 8 pm, the Schuster Center will be the scene of festivities celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. In celebration, the concerts will feature the works of DPO Founder Paul Katz, Domenico Cimarosa, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Richard Strauss. The Miriam Rosenthal Memorial Trust Fund is the concert sponsor.
Sir James Galway, nicknamed “the man with the golden flute,” is widely regarded as both a supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses musical boundaries. In Belfast, as a small child, Sir James began playing the penny whistle before switching to the flute and – after a great deal of practice and study – becoming the premier flute virtuoso in the world today. Sir James and his wife, flutist Lady Jeanne Galway, grace the Mead Theatre stage for a truly unforgettable evening.
The DPO and The Miriam Rosenthal Memorial Trust Fund will give, as a gift to every ticket holder to the Star Artist Gala, a CD entitled Portrait: Celebrating 75 Years And Four Music Directors, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, that features recordings from all four DPO Music Directors. The CD is not for sale; it is a limited edition of only 3,000 copies – created especially for this event. The Miriam Rosenthal Memorial Trust Fund is the concert sponsor as well as the funding organization that made this special edition CD possible.
The CD includes Beethoven’s Egmont Overture (Paul Katz conducting); Richard Strauss’s Don Juan (Charles Wendelken-Wilson conducting); Gustav Holst’s The Planets [Mars, Uranus, Jupiter] (Isaiah Jackson conducting); Ottorino Respigh’s Fountains of Rome (Neal Gittleman conducting); and Steven Winteregg’s Resolution (Neal Gittleman conducting). It also includes background material on the history of the DPO.
This historic CD will never go on sale.
This 75th Anniversary celebration also includes:
* A 7 pm pre-concert performance in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center by the Collegiate Festival Flute Choir, which consists of flutists from area universities directed by Christopher Chaffee, DMA, Assistant Professor of Music at Wright State University .Dayton-based EatonformTM is sponsoring the choir
* At intermission, a group of 12-15 dancers from the Celtic Academy of Irish Dance will perform for 15 minutes in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center, also sponsored by EatonformTM.
Current Executive Director Curt Long and Music Director Neal Gittleman conceived this Special Event as a way of remembering with fondness and gratitude the contributions of Paul Katz, Miriam Rosenthal, Charles Wendelken-Wilson, Isaiah Jackson, and all the musicians, guest artists, donors, subscribers, patrons, volunteers, and staff who have helped make the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra a vital part of the life and lifestyle of the Dayton area.
