About the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
The Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, founded in 1937 by Dr. Paul Katz, was organized to give aspiring young musicians in the greater Dayton area an opportunity to work together studying challenging orchestral music. The Orchestra, beginning its 69th season, continues to provide today’s young musicians with an opportunity to strengthen and expand their musical skills, knowledge, talent, and experience through the study of symphonic orchestral literature.
The DPYO performs four concerts each season and was invited to perform at the 2002, 2004, and 2006 Ohio Music Educators Association conferences. The Youth Orchestra regularly appears on the Dayton Philharmonic’s Time-Warner Cable Family Concert Series.
About the Junior String Orchestra
The Dayton Philharmonic Junior String Orchestra was established in 1982 with the support of Mrs. Virginia Kettering, to provide additional music experience for string students in grades 6-12. The Junior String Orchestra is comprised of 62 students representing 27 different schools from the greater Dayton area. The purpose of this Orchestra is to provide musical enrichment and advanced concert experience for string students in grades 6 through 12.
Students in the Junior String Orchestra will perform challenging original string literature. Regularly performing Winter and Spring concerts, the Junior String Orchestra often performs additional concerts throughout the year.
