Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra to Perform Stained Glass Concert at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Sunday, December 1

DAYTON, OHIO (November 19, 2019) – On Sunday, December 1, 2019 at 5 p.m., Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (DPO) musicians, under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman, will travel to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 380 South Broadway Street, Dayton, Ohio, to celebrate the human spirit through the universal medium of music with their first Stained Glass Series Concert of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance 2019-2020 Titans Season. This concert is free and open to the public, with no ticket required.

The Dayton Philharmonic’s Stained Glass Concerts are part of a series of community outreach efforts called the Norma Ross Memorial Community Concerts in honor of the late Mrs. Norma Ross, a tireless advocate for music and minority youth. All Stained Glass Concerts are free with generous seating available. The 2019–2020 Stained Glass Series and Norma Ross Memorial Community Concerts are made possible by the Bob Ross Auto Group. The Stained Glass Concerts for the 2019-2020 season are also made possible by support from the World Religion Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The program for this year’s concert will include Haydn’s Symphony No. 99, written in 1793 and considered number seven of Haydn’s twelve powerful London Symphonies. The evening will also include Boccherini’s Cello Concerto in B-flat Major, written just a few years prior to Haydn’s work and considered a staple in the modern cello repertoire. Cello soloist for the first movement of Boccherini’s Cello Concerto is Daniel Dorsey, winner of the 2019 David L. Pierson Concerto Competition for Young Artists. Daniel, age 16, is currently a student at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and serves as the Co-Principal Cellist of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra.

The DPO will then perform a beautiful organ piece by American composer Florence Price called Adoration, arranged by Neal Gittleman. Price is considered the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer and the first to have a symphonic work performed by a major national symphony orchestra.

To close the concert, the Dayton Philharmonic will be joined by the Tabernacle Baptist Church Choir for a joyous presentation of “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” composed by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson.

The DPO and The Tabernacle Baptist Church wish to extend an open invitation to the community of Dayton to enjoy a celebratory afternoon when classical and gospel music come together to unite our Dayton community.

The Dayton Philharmonic is pleased to announce the full schedule for the 2019-2020 Stained Glass Concert Series concerts, as follows:

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence. Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
