THE 2022–2023 DAYTON OPERA SEASON:
For the 2022–2023 season, Dayton Opera Artistic Director Kathleen Clawson has selected the perfect combination of an operatic exploration of jazz, an opera holiday favorite, a recital honoring one of opera’s greats, and a classic work of the opera repertoire performed for the very first time by Dayton Opera.

The season opens in October with Charlie Parker’s Yardbird, a powerful expedition into the mind, heart, and personal purgatory of the jazz genius. Then in December, Amahl and the Night Visitors, a fully-staged, brand new production created for Dayton Opera, brings to life the story of three mysterious kings who are following a star to bring gifts to a wondrous child.

In February, Dayton Opera celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maria Callas with a concert of some of the diva’s most famous arias. Then next April, Wagner’s Das Rheingold, a groundbreaking “total work of art” that fully integrates music, poetry, drama, costume, and set design in a sweeping, intense marathon of sight and sound, hits the Schuster Center stage. This will be the first production of Das Rheingold in the history of Dayton Opera.

Dayton Opera’s season is available as a five-performance subscription series.

THE 2022–2023 DAYTON BALLET SEASON:
Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke leads the talented company of Dayton Ballet as they tell some of the most classic stories of all time and celebrate the 85th anniversary of Dayton Ballet in this 2022–2023 season.

October is the perfect setting for Dayton Ballet to present the haunting story of Ichabod Crane in an intriguing brand-new production of Sleepy Hollow, with new musical score by Austin Jaquith, performed live by musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic, with new libretto by Karen Russo Burke.

The December holidays wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Land of Sweets in Tchaikovsky’s beloved The Nutcracker, which returns once again for eight captivating performances. In February, Dayton Ballet welcomes its 85th season and celebrates the 95th year of the Dayton Ballet School with a sparkling affair that preserves Dayton Ballet’s tradition of presenting mixed repertory performances and spotlighting acclaimed choreographers from across the country and around the world.

The season closes in April with a family-friendly journey to Neverland as Dayton Ballet presents Peter Pan, choreographed by Septime Webre. This story is filled with everyone’s favorite characters from the classic tale, including Peter Pan, Wendy, the Lost Boys, the magical Tinkerbell, the menacing Captain Hook, and the dastardly yet wildly entertaining Crocodile. Dayton Ballet is thrilled to present this production of Peter Pan once again with live music by the Dayton Philharmonic.

The Ballet season is available as a five-performance subscription series.

THE 2022–2023 DAYTON PHILHARMONIC MASTERWORKS SEASON:
Classical music is presented in a panorama of options, all sure to delight both novice and expert, in Dayton Philharmonic’s flagship series. The season opens in September with Respighi’s vibrant Pines of Rome and a visit from Brandon Patrick George, a Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra alum and one of the hottest young flutists of our time.

The Masterworks Season continues with a calendar full of dynamic soloists and major classical compositions, under the leadership of DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. This season’s DPO Masterworks concerts include Rimsky-Korsakov’s mesmerizing musical telling of Scheherazade, inspired by The Arabian Nights, Berlioz’s opium-fueled and fantastical Symphonie fantastique, and Tchaikovsky’s genial Third Symphony, nicknamed “Polish.” The orchestra brings to an end its celebration of the 250th anniversary Beethoven and a full three-season journey through his complete symphony cycle with Beethoven’s jubilant Second Symphony.

In addition, exceptional works for violin, piano, cello, and flute will be performed by artists both long established and on the rise. Guest artists who will join flutist Brandon Patrick George on the esteemed list of musicians visiting the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra this season include violinist Vadim Gluzman, pianist Janina Fialkowska, and young cellist Sterling Elliott.

The Masterworks season is available as either a six-concert or eight-concert subscription series. The eight-concert series includes the six concerts mentioned above plus Dayton Opera’s Das Rheingold and a Wild Card, which can be used for any performance in the DPAA 2022–2023 Season.

THE 2022–2023 DAYTON PHILHARMONIC FAMILY SEASON:
The DPAA understands that an appreciation for the arts starts at an early age and lasts a lifetime and remains committed to offering programs to allow parents, grandparents, and caretakers to share the performing arts with their children through programs that encourage and deepen that appreciation.

The DPAA Family Series is a great way to introduce the mystery and majesty of classical music, dance and song to the youthful mind. The annual PhilharMonster Halloween concert is a Dayton favorite, where spooky meets silly in a program for the entire family to enjoy. October is also the perfect setting for Dayton Ballet’s brand-new production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Rounding out the holiday season, the DPAA invites families into Dayton’s beloved holiday tradition with a journey to the Land of Sweets in Dayton Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

In March, fueled by the music of composers like Verdi, Mendelssohn, and Liszt, performed by the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (DPYO) under the baton of DPYO Conductor Patrick Reynolds, the Mysterious Maestro races through dark nights and hidden caverns and explores the nature of musical perfection and a passion that restores the beauty of music for all to enjoy!

Then in April, families are in for a real treat as they are invited on a trip to Neverland with a matinee performance of Dayton Ballet’s Peter Pan, with live music by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Family Season is available as a five-performance subscription series.

The SuperPops Season is available as a five-performance subscription series.

THE 2022–2023 DAYTON PHILHARMONIC ROCKIN’ ORCHESTRA SEASON:
The DPO Rockin’ Orchestra Series is THE musical crossroads where rock meets orchestra, a celebration of “music that shaped a generation” performed by guest bands together with the Dayton Philharmonic. The season begins with a Dayton Philharmonic shout out to John and Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and the iconic Stevie Nicks as the DPO presents Landslide: The Music of Fleetwood Mac.

In November, amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by singer Randy Jackson’s fabulous vocals, guest conductor Brent Havens and the Dayton Philharmonic capture Pink Floyd’s ethereal flow of music and effects while churning out new musical colors. Then in February, step inside the Schuster Center and into the DPO musical time warp and be transported back to a time when hair was big, leg warmers were the accessories of choice, and parachute pants ruled with Rewind: Celebrating the Music of the 80s.

June brings an evening of music from the legendary Paul Simon as the DPO explores his unique artistry as a songwriter from his years with Simon and Garfunkel through his solo albums Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints.

The Rockin’ Orchestra Season is available as a five-performance subscription series.

 THE 2022–2023 DPAA SPECIAL EVENTS:
As a leader in performing arts in southwest Ohio and the nation’s only combined Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) strives continually to bring wholly new experiences to the stage.

Special Events of the DPAA are performances that either combine the power of all three art forms or those that are often purchased apart from packaged series.

The DPAA will present two of its favorite holiday traditions: Handel’s Messiah on December 14 and the annual New Year’s Eve celebration, entitled Voyage à Paris, on December 31, a performance that continues to be the toast of the town.
