The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Introduces Its First Concert for Middle and High School Students, Performing for Over 2,000 Dayton Area Students on January 28 and 29

DAYTON, OH (January 24, 2020)On Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 9:45 a.m. at the Dayton Masonic Center, over 1,100 students in grades 6 through 12 from 18 schools across the Miami Valley will attend the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s Concert for Middle and High School Students, under the direction of Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. A combined band of nearly 50 local band students will perform alongside the Dayton Philharmonic for Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, including students representing Dayton Public Schools, Troy Christian Schools, Franklin Schools, and Centerville Schools.

Then, on Wednesday, January 29, over 900 students from Kettering Schools will attend a second performance of this concert at Kettering Fairmont High School, including all students in the Fairmont High School music program and all students in Kettering’s middle school band and orchestra programs. A band of 34 Kettering Fairmont High School band students will perform alongside the Dayton Philharmonic for the 1812 Overture.

This concert for middle and high school students is a brand-new DPAA event for the 2019-2020 Titans Season.

Students at the middle school and high school age crave powerful, gripping experiences. No experience is more powerful than hearing a great orchestra perform great music live. This DPAA concert is aimed at providing an engaging musical experience, deepening students’ critical thinking, and enhancing classroom discussions after the performance.

This first Middle and High School Concert is entitled “The Music of War, Protest, and Revolution.” Through the years, composers have drawn their musical inspiration from the events of their time. Music of war, protest, and revolution is charged with emotion. It is exciting, poignant, and timeless. This concert will focus on music written in response to social and historical events in four different centuries: a 16th-century freedom movement, an 18th-century job walkout, the War of 1812 and Napoleon, and the 20th-century Civil Rights movement. The program will include famous works by Beethoven, Haydn, Copland, Adams, and Tchaikovsky.

This Concert for Middle and High School Students has been generously funded by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Sue Merz, Ms. Anne F. Johnson, and the Kettering Education Foundation Endowment Fund.

Each year the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to reach almost 75,000 children and their families through concerts, in-school presentations, and participatory programs. For more information on these programs aimed at providing unique opportunities for children and their families to access the arts in the greater Dayton area, visit www.daytonperformingarts.org/education.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence. Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
