The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Opens Its 2021‒2022 with a Stunning Salute to Heroes in a Dayton Philharmonic Masterworks Concert Featuring Beethoven’s Eroica

DAYTON, OH (September 17, 2021) – On Friday, October 1, 2021 and Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 8:00 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra open the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s 2021‒2020 Season with a Masterworks concert entitled, Beethoven’s Eroica: A Salute to Heroes. The DPO is pleased to welcome to the stage acclaimed violinist Philippe Quint for this performance. This opening concert is the 2021‒2022 William S. Anderson Memorial Endowed Concert.

As Dayton returns to a “new normal” with LIVE music, the Dayton Philharmonic begins with a salute to the heroes of the pandemic—the first responders, medical personnel, delivery drivers, and all those whose jobs suddenly carried greater risk—Austin Jaquith’s driving musical portrait Heldenleben 2020, or “Heroic Life 2020.” Two themes, each representing heroism, form the backbone of the work. The first is a quotation from the work’s titular inspiration, Ein Heldenleben, and represents ancient heroes; the second portrays our modern heroes, with a score that is more pulsating and restrained, with occasional outbursts of melody. The work isn’t a narrative tone poem as much as it is a musical journey, and Jaquith has dedicated the piece to every hero who suffered as a result of the Coronavirus.

The evening continues with Felix Mendelssohn’s masterful Violin Concerto in E minor. While this concerto is not Mendelssohn’s first violin concert (he wrote one in D minor when he was just a teen), it is most certainly his more famous one, and, in fact, considered to be one of the most important works to tackle as an accomplished violinist. Returning to the DPO is acclaimed violinist Philippe Quint, who takes the spotlight for the sparkling jewel of a concerto.  A multi-Grammy Award nominee, Quint is internationally recognized for his unique and insightful approach to standard repertoire, and BBC Music Magazine has recently described him as “truly phenomenal” and “a throwback to the glory days of Fritz Kreisler.”

Heroism also marks the music of Beethoven’s Third Symphony, originally dedicated to Napoleon before he crowned himself emperor, but then furiously retitled “Sinfonia eroica, Composed to Celebrate the Memory of a Great Man.” From bolts-out-of-the-blue opening chords to exhilarating finale, the Symphony’s majesty and drama, extraordinary scope, and bold harmonies all proclaim a new era in music.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the greater Dayton community, with a mission to be the community’s indispensable source for traditional, diverse and innovative experiences in ballet, opera, and orchestral music. The vision of the DPAA is to transform lives through the power of music and dance.
