The Music Man features actors/vocalists in a concert performance of Meredith Willson’s blockbuster Broadway musical
On Friday and Saturday evenings, February 22 and 23 at 8 pm in the Schuster Center, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, DPO Chorus, and Music Director Neal Gittleman will present a concert performance of The Music Man, featuring Norman Moses (Professor Harold Hill) and Diane Penning (Marian Paroo) in the lead roles, with regional vocalists Olivia Watson, Jonathan Zink, and barbershop quartet The Roaring 20s. While only sixth-graders, Olivia Watson and Jonathan Zink in the roles of Amaryliss and Winthrop respectively are nonetheless veterans of the footlights.
Meredith Willson’s classic Broadway and cinema musical has become one of America’s most cherished theatre treasures. However, on the Broadway stage with smaller orchestras tucked away in the pit, it is not often heard to its best advantage. This concert version, sans costumes and scenery, brings the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra right up onto the stage, allowing the music itself to really shine.
