Beethoven originally dedicated his Third Symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte…until Napoleon declared himself emperor. Enraged, he ripped the front page from this manuscript and scrubbed out Napoleon’s name. More importantly, the symphony ushered in the Romantic era while brilliantly breaking all the rules.
