Brahms builds his Symphony No. 3 around the notes F, A-flat, F, with the letters standing for the composer’s personal motto “frei aber froh” (free but happy), his response to a friend’s contrasting F, A, E motto, “frei aber einsam” (free but lonely). Still, Brahms’s emotional palette paints not only in happy colors but also in shades of yearning and serene resignation.
Woman of Note Stella Sung’s multimedia Oceana will engage you with music, film, and audience participation. Her tribute to life in the oceans is a soundscape at once alive with the calls of humpback whales, dolphins, and porpoises and also frightening—showing mankind’s incursion on a fragile ecology.
Our stellar DPO Chorus and soloists join for Bruckner’s Te Deum—his finest choral composition—with massive forces gloriously proclaiming the deeply religious composer’s praise of God. Heavenly!
