Four + Four = Eight = our High-Octane Strings—the DPO Principal and Beo string quartets playing boy-wonder Mendelssohn’s giddiness-inducing Octet—radiant, gossamer, and lickety-split. But first, an inspired pairing to start the concert. Haydn dedicated his 62nd string quartet to Emperor Franz II—hence the nickname—and its stately second movement theme later became Germany’s National Anthem. The Beo String Quartet picks up where Haydn left off with Sean Neukom’s amazing multimedia work, which reimagines and “recycles” the “Emperor” String Quartet you just heard and “transports you into a different world, a fantasyland, with unexpected, crazy, fun results,” according to the composer. And with that, our 2020-2021 Recital Series is off and running!
