Renowned concert pianist returns to the DPO to perform two piano concertos…and two different concert programs
An evening with superstar pianist Emanuel Ax is a rare treat. A program in which he performs two concertos is rarer still! On Thursday, April 20 and Saturday, April 22, at 8 pm at the Schuster Center, the program starts with DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic OrchestraA Letter from Mozart performing , an engrossing work by Colgrass. Then, Manny – as Emanuel Ax is affectionately known – performs a pair of classical literature’s finest concertos back-to-back: the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, K. 503 and the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 83.
The program, Manny & the Masters, is a bold start to the Amadeus Downtown portion of the NCR Miracle of Mozart Festival, our spring celebration of the 250th Anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Join us in the Wintergarden at 7 p.m. on both evenings for entertainment provided by the Dayton Mandolin Orchestra headed by Music Director Allen Richmond.
Then, on Friday, April 21, Manny joins the DPO for the final program in the 2005-2006 season’s Dayton Daily News Classical Connections series. With Manny at the keyboard, Neal on the podium, and the Orchestra on the stage, all is in place for a loving look at one of the greatest Viennese composers – Johannes Brahms. The program moves from Brahms’s celebratory Hungarian Dances (Nos. 1, 3, & 10) to the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 83.
Manny is back…and back to back. Don’t miss it!
