DAYTON, OH (February 14, 2020) – On Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 3 pm in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (DPYO), under the direction of Conductor Patrick Reynolds, will present the third concert in the 2019–2020 DP&L Foundation Family Series, The Musical World of Harry Potter.
Since the first book release in 1997 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by British author J. K. Rowling, young wizard Harry Potter has taken the world by storm. A slight title change, to Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone for its 1999 American release, emphasized the magic and mystique of the setting and story, and Rowling’s world of wizardry skyrocketed to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list. Over the course of the next two decades, Rowling added six more novels, each one more intriguing than the previous. Over twenty years later, to say that Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon would be an understatement!
In 2001, the first film based on this popular series was released. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, after Rowling’s novel of the same name, quickly became the top-grossing film of that year, with a staggering total of over $975 million in box office sales worldwide. World-renowned film composer John Williams wrote the enchanting score to this first film, and the world simply could not get enough! Since 2001, a total of eight movies have been released, with the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, told in two installments that hit the box office in 2010 (Part 1) and then in 2011 (Part 2). Over the course of these eight movies, four different composers—John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat—have tapped their creative genius to deliver the music that has whisked the world on the magical journey through the world of Harry Potter.
This March, the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Conductor Patrick Reynolds, is thrilled to present The Musical World of Harry Potter. This concert, developed by members of the DPYO under Reynolds’ guidance, will include projected images of Harry Potter–related scenes and characters, while the music that created movie magic fills the Schuster and transports us to Hogwarts and beyond. Audience members may even have the chance to learn a magic spell or two!
Be sure to break out your capes and wands, as any and all Harry Potter–themed costumes are welcomed and encouraged! Come board that magical train departing from the mysterious platform not found on any official schedule, and get ready for an afternoon of witchcraft, wizardry and sheer fun for the entire family!

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence. Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
