DAYTON, OH (May 15, 2019) – On Saturday, May 4, 2019, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance announced the opening of single-ticket sales for three exciting “Films with Live Orchestra” coming in the 2019-2020 Titans Season. The Dayton Philharmonic is excited to present three full-length feature movies: Apollo 13, Star Wars: A New Hope™, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The DPO will provide the full orchestral accompaniment to these blockbuster films with the soundtracks stripped of all orchestral music; only the actors’ dialogue and the incredible sound effects remain. The result will be three engaging and electric experiences of film and live musical score – surround sound at its outright finest!
“Hollywood is now a major center of composing for symphony orchestra,” said DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. “These great film scores are modern-day equivalents of the orchestral tone poems of Liszt and Strauss. They use the same thematic techniques of Wagner’s operas, and they employ the full-blooded orchestral forces of Prokofiev and Shostakovich. Playing to accompany live-projected films is tricky for conductor and musicians alike, as the music is often quite difficult. But it’s fun to play and lots of fun for the audience! Multiplexes will tell you that they have state-of-the-art sound systems, but nothing beats the sound of the musicians of a live symphony orchestra playing their hearts out beneath the big screen!”
