Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Jessica Hung and Friends Explore the Rich Chamber Music of Romantic Era Composer Johannes Brahms

DAYTON, OH (May 13, 2019) – On Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 3:00 pm in the Mimi and Stuart Rose Auditorium of the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Jessica Hung and two fellow musicians will delve into the complex chamber repertoire of Johannes Brahms in the final concert of the 2018–2019 Recital Series. Jessica will be joined by guest cellist Cecilia Huerta-Lauf and guest pianist Claire-Chung Lim. DPAA’s Innovation Partner for this 2018-2019 Vistas Season is the DP&L Foundation: Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

DPO Concertmaster Jessica Hung has chosen an all-Brahms program for this final Recital Concert of the 2018–2019 season. The repertoire of chamber music from Brahms is some of the most difficult to play because it requires the music to sound both intimate and symphonic in scope. The result, however, is some of the most profoundly poetic musical compositions of all time.

The First Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 78, is among Brahms’ most nuanced and gently understated works. It has a nostalgic, autumnal feel characteristic of his mature compositions. The Second Cello Sonata in F major, Op. 99, is an even later work with a heroic, crusading character expressed in both the high and low registers of the instrument. Finally, the B major Piano Trio, Op. 8, which brings together piano, cello, and violin, in contrast is a very early work with a somewhat simpler and more refined style, including a mysterious scherzo in B minor. However, the predominant major tonalities of all three pieces on this program should make for a very uplifting afternoon of thoroughly rich Romantic music in the gorgeous setting of the Dayton Art Institute.

Tickets for Concertmaster’s Choice are $22 for adults and $14 for students, and all tickets are General Admission Seating. Tickets are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at www.daytonperformingarts.org. Senior, teacher and military discounts are available at the box office. For more information or to order subscriptions, including flexible subscription types that include performances by Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Opera and Dayton Ballet, visit www.daytonperformingarts.org.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence. Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
