DAYTON, OH (Jan. 9, 2022) – Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) presents an intimate afternoon of chamber music featuring the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal String Quartet and friends on January 15 at 3 pm at Dayton Art Institute’s Mimi and Stuart Rose Auditorium. The concert features Brahms’ Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 and Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major.
The afternoon begins with Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114 for clarinet, cello, and piano featuring Philharmonic principal clarinet, John Kurokawa; principal cello, Jonathan Lee; and principal keyboard, Joshua Nesmith. The Clarinet Trio is one of Brahms’ four chamber pieces highlighting the instrument and was specifically written for the clarinetist, Richard Mühlfeld after Brahms heard him perform in March 1891.
Composed two months before his death in 1828, Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, Op. 163 is often referred to as the “Cello Quintet” because it is written for a standard string quartet (two violins, two violas, and a cello) but substitutes a second cello for one of the violas, to create a rich, low register. The String Quintet in C Major is considered Schubert’s only full-string quintet. Dayton Philharmonic’s acting concertmaster Aurelian Oprea; violin Kirstin Greenlaw; principal viola Sheridan Currie; principal cello John Kurokawa; assistant principal cello Christina Coletta will perform what is generally regarded as one of Schubert’s finest chamber works.
Adult tickets are $25, and students are $10. Tickets are on sale at daytonperformingarts.org/tickets/chamberconcert.
