DAYTON, OH (August 25, 2013) – Don’t have lunch at your desk; the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance will be serving up entertainment for brown-baggers and noontime outdoor seekers with DPAA on the Square, Monday, September 16 thru Thursday, September 19, from Noon to 1 p.m. at Courthouse Square in Downtown Dayton.
The 4-day noontime event — in conjunction with Downtown Dayton Partnership and Montgomery County’s “The Square is Where” — leads up to the DPAA’s opening weekend of its 2013-14 Signature Season with the Season Opening Spectacular on Saturday, September 21 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m. at the Schuster Center. Season information and a free full-color calendar listing all DPAA performances will be available.
DPAA on the Square will feature performances from the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic. Ever played a violin? Visit the Instrument Petting Zoo and test your skill. Courthouse Square will also have food trucks, vendors, games and plenty of outdoor seating.

Monday, September 16 – Carillon Brass
The Carillon Brass consists of Charles Pagnard, trumpet; Alan Siebert, trumpet; Aaron Brant, horn; Timothy Anderson, trombone and Timothy Northcutt, tuba. All five are members of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.
Tuesday, September 17 – Violin Duets
DPO Concertmaster Jessica Hung and Associate Concertmaster Violinist Aurelian Oprea will perform Duo Concertante for Two Violins in D major by Charles de Beriot and Sonata for Two Violins in C major by Sergei Prokofiev.
Wednesday, September 18 – Dayton Opera & Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Quartet
Puerto Rican soprano Zulimar López-Hernández and Florida-based tenor Matt Morgan sing a selection of arias and musical theatre pieces. They will be featured in DPAA’s Season Opening Spectacular along with the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Philharmonic – in a salute to Leonard Bernstein. Founded in 1937, the DPYO brings together the greater Dayton area’s most gifted young orchestral musicians, providing the opportunity to study and perform a broad range of orchestral repertoire. The quartet members are Donovan Christman, violin; Grant Wareham, violin; Francis Ballester, viola; Paul Schubert, cello.
Thursday, September 19 – Dayton Ballet & Dayton Opera
Members of Dayton Ballet will perform selections from their repertoire. Greek-American mezzo-soprano Layna Chianakas and International Bass-baritone Mark Schnaible will perform a selection of arias and musical theatre pieces. They will be featured in DPAA’s Season Opening Spectacular along with the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Philharmonic.
In the Season Opening Spectacular, the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic come together under the artistic leadership of conductor Neal Gittleman, choreographer Karen Russo Burke, and producing director Thomas Bankston to feature the works of four very different composers — Anton Dvorák, Arrigo Boito, Leonard Bernstein and DPAA Artist-in-Residence Stella Sung – with two performances containing full orchestra, operatic singing and dance at the Schuster Center.
