Alan Higgs

American bass-baritone Alan Higgs is an alumnus of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where during his residency he performed The King in Cendrillon, the Second Trojan Man in Idomeneo, Count Ceprano in Rigoletto and Gualtiero Valton in I puritani, along with other assignments. In the fall of 2023, he portrayed the role of Hortensius in La fille du régiment at the Lyric Opera of Chicago where he was praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “comedic sparks”. In his 2022-2023 season, Higgs was the guest artist and lecturer for the Southeast Regional Metropolitan Opera Competition of which he was a winner in 2017 and returned to Opera San Antonio to perform the role of the Duke in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. His 2021-2022 season included Monterone in Rigoletto with Florentine Opera, Colline in La bohème with Vero Beach Opera and Operas Birmingham, as well as a return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago as the Sacristan in Tosca. Other recent performances include the role of Alidoro with Dayton Opera and was in rehearsals for Pandolfe in Cendrillon with Opera Birmingham when the pandemic shut down occurred. In 2019 he returned to The Atlanta Opera as Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata and Santa Fe Opera as the Mayor in Jenufa. His 2019-2020 season included his debut with San Antonio Opera as Angelotti and Sciarrone in Tosca, Alidoro in Cenerentola as well as the Fifth Jew and a Cappadocian in Salome both with The Atlanta Opera, and Handel’s Messiah with the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Mr. Higgs made his debut with Santa Fe Opera as an Apprentice Artist for their 60th anniversary season, where he performed the role of Jose Castro in La fanciulla del West and covered roles in Vanessa and Capriccio. While at Santa Fe, he received the Katharine Mayer Award in 2016 and the Donald Gramm Memorial Award in 2019 for his outstanding performance as a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice.

In the 2016-2017 season Mr. Higgs was a Studio Artist with the Atlanta Opera. His performances included the British Major in Silent Night, the Mandarin in Turandot, Alidoro in the Studio tour of Cenerentola and a cover of Don Pasquale in the mainstage production, with a performance of the title role in the Student Short. Additional notable engagements include Gregorio in Roméo et Juliette with Atlanta Opera, Raphael in Haydn’s Creation with the Georgia State Symphony Orchestra, and the Holiday Pops Movie Spectacular with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. 

He made his professional debut with The Atlanta Opera in 2014 as the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly and as Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro. In the fall of 2015, he returned to The Atlanta Opera performing the dual roles of Benoît and Alcindoro in La bohème. 

Mr. Higgs has enjoyed considerable success as a young artist. In 2021 he was the recipient of the Tommy and Simonetta Special Award in the Vero Beach Opera Rising Stars Competition. In 2018 he received both a Solti Foundation and American Opera Society Scholarship. He is also the recipient of a 2016-2017 Sullivan Foundation Award and was a Semifinalist of the 2017 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
