Chandler Johnson is an artistic administrator whose work bridges creative vision with operational strategy, ensuring opera remains vibrant, accessible, and deeply connected to contemporary audiences. He earned his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Johnson is thrilled to return to Ohio, bringing his career back to the region where his professional training took shape.
At The Santa Fe Opera, Johnson advanced through the artistic department, serving as Artistic & Casting Associate, Manager of Casting & Apprentice Program, Associate Director, and ultimately, Director of the Apprentice Program for Singers. In that role, he oversaw the full lifecycle of the nationally recognized training program. Working closely with senior artistic leadership, he contributed to principal and cover casting, long-range artistic planning, budget oversight, and cross-departmental collaboration.
As a member of the artistic staff at Los Angeles Opera, Johnson served as Associate Manager of Artistic Programs, administering the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program, coordinating rehearsal schedules for mainstage productions, executing artist contracts, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the artistic department.
Johnson was a member of the inaugural Clayco Future Leaders Fellowship Program (Artistic) at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. There he gained a comprehensive understanding of artistic administration and benefited from invaluable mentorship that helped shape the next stage of his career.
Prior to his work in artistic administration, Johnson enjoyed a performing career that brought him to Opera Santa Barbara, The Glimmerglass Festival, Chautauqua Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, Opera Columbus, and Cincinnati Opera. His experience on stage continues to inform his approach to artistic leadership and his work within American opera institutions.
Over the course of his career, Johnson has cultivated an extensive network of artists, creative collaborators, and arts leaders. His leadership philosophy centers on combining artistic excellence with operational precision, nurturing emerging talent, and creating collaborative experiences that foster meaningful connections between opera companies and the communities they serve.
