Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Assn. Chair
Based in Southern California, Elvin Schlanger is the newly appointed Principal Flute of the Dayton Philharmonic. He is also the 3rd Flute/Piccolo of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and has made appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and Pacific Symphony, among others.
Elvin has won and placed in several competitions including the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Competition, the Music Academy of the West Keston MAX Competition, and the Music Academy of the West Duo Competition. He was also awarded 2nd Prize in the 2023 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, and recently won 1st Prize in the 2025 San Diego Flute Guild Young Artist Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with the Inland Valley Youth Symphony, Southern California Philharmonic, Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Academy Festival Orchestra, and the Colburn Orchestra. This summer, he was a fellow at the
Hidden Valley Festival of Winds where he worked with Principal Flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Seth Morris.
Elvin received his Artist Diploma from the Colburn School where he studied with Jim Walker. He is also a graduate of the Yale School of Music where he earned his Master’s Degree studying with Ransom Wilson, and of CSU Long Beach where he received his Bachelor’s Degree studying with Dr. John Barcellona. He has had the honor of working with legendary flutists and teachers such as Catherine Karoly, Sarah Jackson, Carol Wincenc, Demarre McGill, Jennifer Grim, Philippe Bernold, Emmanuel Pahud, Yubeen Kim, and Sebastian Jacot.
Elvin is a Wm. S. Haynes Young Artist, and plays a Haynes Custom Fusion flute. When away from his flute, he enjoys picking it back up again to play duets with his wife Emily and serenade their fur babies, Anya and Peewee.
