American dramatic tenor Robert Stahley, known for “bringing vociferous ring to the tenor line,” (South Florida Classical Review), will appear in the 2024-2025 season as Canio in I Pagliacci, make his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2024-2025, singing the 1st Armed Man in The Magic Flute, and covering the Messenger in Aida, The Voice of a Young Man in Die Frau ohne Schatten and the Third Jew in Salome. In the 2023-2024 season, Robert Stahley sang Canio with Glimmerglass Opera, a Wagner highlights concert as Siegmund with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West with North Carolina Opera, and in concert, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Colorado Symphony.
Previous engagements include Erik in Der fliegende Holländer with Utah Opera, which he also covered with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Cavaradossi in Tosca with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Froh in Das Rheingold with The Dallas Opera, Siegmund in Jonathan Dove’s reduction of Die Walküre with Opera Santa Barbara, Jupiter in Semele with Opera Santa Barbara, The Captain in John Corigliano’s The Lord of Cries with Santa Fe Opera, Melot and the Young Sailor in Tristan und Isolde with the LA Philharmonic, Leukippos in Daphne with the American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and Narraboth in Salome with the Bard Festival. A graduate of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein young artist program at LA Opera, he performed Walther in Tannhäuser, Le Berger in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, Valcour in L’Amant Anonyme, and the First Armored Man in Barrie Kosky’s Die Zauberflöte.
Previous concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem with the Bakersfield Symphony, Quad-City Symphony, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Dayton Philharmonic and Lynn Philharmonia, and Indianapolis Symphony singing arias from Tosca and Die Zauberflöte. He has also been the tenor soloist for Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, St. Matthew Passion with the Amherst Bach Festival, and the tenor soloist in Schubert’s Mass in A-flat with CCM choirs.
Other significant roles include the Male Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia), Candide (Candide) Idomeneo (Idomeneo), the title role in The Tales of Hoffmann, The Schoolmaster (The Cunning Little Vixen), Charlie (Mahagonny-Songspiel), The Lamplighter and Drunk (The Little Prince), Sam Kaplan (Street Scene), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), and Hubert Humphrey (Dark River).
Mr. Stahley won first prize in the 2019 Wagner Society of New York Competition, was a third prize winner in the 2018 Gerda Lissner Vocal Competition, placed first in the 2017 Piccolo Vocal Competition, and was a finalist in the 2018 Mildred Miller Competition. He completed his Artist Diploma and Masters at the College Conservatory of Music.
