The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Announces the Public Phase of Its One Dayton. One Alliance. Endowment Campaign to Support the Ballet, Opera, Philharmonic, and Arts Education in the Dayton Region

The One Dayton. One Alliance. Campaign Has Reached 80% of Its $15 Million Goal and Engages the Dayton Community to Reach the Finish Line

“Please give generously; it’s an investment in our community’s future.”
– Allison Janney, Honorary Chair

DAYTON, OH (March 4, 2020) – As part of a bold new promise to engage every citizen in the power of music and dance, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance announced today that it is seeking a goal of $15 million in endowment investment and new planned gift commitments. This endowment fundraising initiative, One Dayton. One Alliance, is a vital element in the advancement of an exciting reimagining of the performing arts in Dayton through innovative programming and dynamic education opportunities. This campaign will allow the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (the Alliance) to expand its impact from the stage to every facet of civic life in Dayton and the surrounding region.

The launch of the public phase of this campaign comes as the Alliance is now 80% of the way toward its goal of $15 million. To date, $12 million has been raised during the quiet phase of the campaign, which has comprised two years of careful internal planning and the securing of preliminary gifts from individual and institutional donors who have been long-term champions of the arts in Dayton. With the launch of the public phase of this campaign, the Alliance aims to exceed its goal of $15 million by the end of 2020.

The public phase of the fundraising initiative One Dayton. One Alliance. was announced today with great fanfare at a morning reception at 10:30 a.m. in the Mathile Theatre of the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center in downtown Dayton. Key individuals from the region attended this standing-room-only event to show their support for this campaign and their commitment to the arts in Dayton.

“I’m proud to serve as Honorary Chair for One Dayton. One Alliance, the endowment campaign for Dayton’s performing arts,” said actress and Dayton native Allison Janney. “One of the formative experiences of my life was being part of the Dayton Ballet School. We can help make that kind of life-changing opportunity available to future generations by supporting the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance in this special campaign. Please give generously; it’s an investment in our community’s future.”

“Our goal is to raise $15 million to sustain performing arts in the greater Dayton community,” stated Dayton Performing Arts Alliance Board Chair John Beran. “We are calling on the community to help us reach our goal so that we can ensure that innovative programming, dynamic educational opportunities and live performances are able to continue. We are thrilled to have raised $12 million of the $15 million goal in the initial phases of our campaign, and we now call on the Dayton community to help take us boldly to the finish line.”

In 2012, leadership of the Dayton Opera, Dayton Ballet, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra created a groundbreaking and innovative merger, forging these three art forms into one organization named the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance. This merger is the first of its kind in the nation—in no other city can performing arts lovers experience the dramatic collaboration with the range and depth of experiences being offered in the Dayton community. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, with Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Ballet, and Dayton Opera as its three crown jewels, carefully planned for future success by creating a single management structure and business operating unit while preserving and promoting the integrity and identity of each of its three art forms. This alliance, still unique in the nation, emulates the model of highly successful European performing arts organizations, taking artistic collaboration to a new level.

Seven years after the merger of these three innovative art forms, the Alliance stands strong. The organization has bolstered its world-class programming while building a lean administrative and board structure, and it has developed new funding mechanisms and partnerships to support its work. The result is a carefully managed and artistically vibrant organization that is uniquely positioned to serve Dayton and the surrounding region both today and in the future.

“For over 220 combined years, the Dayton region has enjoyed the artistic excellence, community outreach and educational programming provided by the three organizations of Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera, and Dayton Philharmonic, while independent and as a merged entity known as the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance,” said DPAA President and CEO Patricia McDonald. “These endowment dollars will ensure our long-term vibrancy as a sustainable community asset.”

The Alliance has set forth a bold new strategic vision, one that seeks to transform lives through the power of music and dance. This vision is guided by seven key values:

* To be a welcoming force to all people of the greater Dayton community
* To be fearless innovators, committed to bold exploration of new horizons in music and dance
* To be responsible stewards of ballet, opera, and orchestral music in the Dayton region
* To be uncompromising performers
* To be inspiring educators, stimulating imaginations and opening minds to new possibilities
* To be a dynamic partner in the cultural, education, and business sectors of Dayton
* To be fierce advocates to achieve our vision through leadership and commitment

While other cities struggle economically and for relevance, unable to advance past an industrial legacy, Dayton has vibrantly adapted to the 21st century. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is positioning itself for generational growth to engage every individual in our community through performances, programs, and educational opportunities. The Alliance is seeking support from those who are dedicated to these same goals and who understand that an investment today in One Dayton. One Alliance. will move the Alliance to the next level of growth and sustainability. These dedicated supporters will leave a legacy and a gift to the future of a thriving Dayton, where the arts are at the center of culture and civic pride, now and for generations to come.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence. Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents. In 2013, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was thrilled to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is the proud recipient of a 2017-2018 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
