The Dayton Philharmonic String Quartet Takes the Stage at the Dayton Art Institute to Present a Lovely Afternoon of Music

DAYTON, OH (February 25, 2019) – On Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 3 pm in the Mimi and Stuart Rose Auditorium of the Dayton Art Institute, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Principal String Quartet will present String Quartet Gems, the first concert in the 2018-2019 Recital Series. The String Quartet comprises four incredibly talented women of the Dayton Philharmonic :  Jessica Hung, DPO Concertmaster; Kirstin Greenlaw, Principal Second Violin; Sheridan Currie, Principal Viola; and Christina Coletta, Acting Principal Cello. DPAA’s Innovation Partner for this 2018-2019 Vistas Season is the DP&L Foundation: Powering Innovation in the Performing Arts.

The musical talent and strength of four female musicians from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra join to form the enchanting Dayton Philharmonic String Quartet. Together, they present an afternoon of stunning selections from the rich repertory of music written specifically for the string quartet. The Mimi and Stuart Rose Auditorium of the elegant Dayton Art Museum resonates with the full sound of four stringed instruments humming together in perfect harmony.

The afternoon opens with a beautiful work by Luigi Boccherini, a skillful Italian composer whose Quartet in F minor retains classical elements but was also very much ahead of its time.

The program continues with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Eighth Quartet, his most famous quartet featuring the haunting, obsessive use of the autobiographical D-S-C-H theme or signature (the actual notes are D, E-flat, C, and B) throughout the piece. The work is dedicated to the victims of war and fascism and is always a timely piece to perform as a reminder of both the horrors and suffering in the world and the power to transcend through a musical outlet of grief and remembrance.

The afternoon closes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet Op. 74, so named for a fiendishly virtuosic first violin passage, full of colorful arpeggios toward the end of the first movement. Like Boccherini’s opening work, this work for strings was also considered ahead of its time. Beethoven wrote this important quartet during his “middle” period in the early nineteenth century, when he was really beginning to bridge into Romanticism. The final movement of the quartet is a theme and variations, one of his favorite forms.

Tickets for String Quartet Gems are $22 for adults and $14 for students, and all tickets are General Admission Seating. Tickets are available at Ticket Center Stage (937) 228-3630 or online at www.daytonperformingarts.org. Senior, teacher and military discounts are available at the box office. For more information or to order subscriptions, including flexible subscription types that include performances by Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Opera and Dayton Ballet, visit www.daytonperformingarts.org.

About the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance
The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance was formed in July 2012 as the result of a groundbreaking and innovative merger between the Dayton Ballet, the Dayton Opera, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Together, they are the largest performing arts organization in the community, offering a tremendous variety of performance and education programs and setting a new standard for artistic excellence.  Dayton Performing Arts Alliance performances are made possible in part by Montgomery County and Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the Miami Valley. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance also receives partial funding from the Ohio Arts Council, a state agency created to foster and encourage the development of the arts and to preserve Ohio’s cultural heritage. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohio residents.  The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is proud to be one of five performing arts organizations in the country selected to receive a three-year “Music Alive” grant from New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras.
